Week 9 Writing Assignment

LaChapelle HEAVEN TO HELL:

David LaChapelle. Controversial. Explosive. Thought-provoking. Considered the world's most famous living photographer, he has been breaking all the rules for over twenty years.
This book is the last chapter in a trilogy that started with the New York Times bestseller LaChapelle Land (1996), and continued with Hotel LaChapelle (1999), one of the most sought after and collected photography books of all time.
Celebrated as the Fellini of photography, LaChapelle has photographed personalities as diverse as Tupac Shakur, Andy Warhol, Madonna, Amanda Lepore, Lance Armstrong, Eminem, Pamela Anderson, Elizabeth Taylor, David Beckham, Lil'Kim, Hillary Clinton, Philip Johnson, Paris Hilton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ima Thurman, Muhammad Ali, and Britney Spears, to name just a few.
While referencing and acknowledging such diverse sources as Renaissance art history, cinema, The Bible, pornography and the new globalized pop culture, LaChapelle has fashioned a deeply personal and epoch-defining visual language that holds a mirror to the face of our times, reflecting back both the sacred and profane.
·         Main Idea: To complete the trilogy in the series of pictures. To capture a vast amount of photos in his collection and string them together into a single collection; combining images of pop culture, art history, cinema, religious references and many other styles.
·         Purpose: To create art. David LaChapelle combines film stars, porn stars, politicians and many others to create a massive album of art.
·         Techniques: Contrast, lighting, composition, background materials and iconic references.

Week 8 - Writing Assignment

"Eyes That Cannot See" by David Lachappele

In this picture, David Bowie is depicted with two false eye cut outs placed over his eye sockets. The lighting in this picture supports the main subject because it gives him definition but it is up-close and shows every definition to him and his faulty characteristics. In this picture, the light is coming from in front of him but to the left of him just enough to hive his right side of his face shadows. Since there is a hard shadow and little diffusion, the light source(s) would be close, probably a few feet away.
